When the Jews lives were threatened over 2000 years ago in Persia, during the time of Queen Esther, the Jews' survival was not dependent on diplomacy, it was contingent on fixing their relationship with HaShem. The first thing Esther did was order all Jews to fast and pray for three days to make things right between them and HaShem. Only then did she approach the King to get their sentence overturned.
